How Waves Are Made

How Waves Are Made
  • Waves are mainly a product of the wind. The best waves for surfing are the result of the interaction of winds on the surface of the ocean, far away from the coast. Wind is the first step in the formation of surfable waves.
  • Local shore winds can also produce waves, but they can also destroy the quality of the breaking waves. Onshore winds are typically known for creating choppy and bumpy waves because their effect is added to the direction of the wave.
  • In a way, offshore winds are a sort of a counterbalance. Swell comes from miles away and the ground wind works as a "pause-hold" effect on the wave face, allowing longer unbreakable waves. In theory, low pressure systems are responsible for creating good and strong waves.
  • In deep low pressure systems, wind speed is greater and more waves are generated by the power of the gusts.

The weta is only found in New Zealand and is so old it has outlived the dinosaurs.

Weta are large by insect standards. Some of the giant weta are enormous and are amongst the heaviest insects in the world

The weta is sometimes called the dinosaur of the insect world

The weta is more primitive than the tuatara. The weta has changed very little in the past 100 million years.

  • The Kiwi is New Zealand’s national bird and considered an evolutionary oddity. It differs from all other bird species on earth.
  • Kiwis are considered "non birdlike" and fill an ecological niche elsewhere occupied by mammals such as anteaters and hedgehogs.
  • Unlike other birds, the Kiwi has a strong sense of smell.
  • The Kiwi’s nostrils are situated at the end of its beak, unlike other birds that have their nostrils near the back of their beak. Its beak is equipped with pressure and vibration detectors enabling it to detect its prey deep underground.

  • The Kiwi lays the biggest egg in proportion to its body-size. Even though the Kiwi is about the size of a chicken, its egg is six times the size of a chicken egg. The largest recorded Kiwi egg weighed 500 grams.
